Panicale- The winner takes the cheese

In  the hill town of Panicale, la Pasquetta (the Monday after Easter Sunday) means the il Ruzzolone, where participants try to roll and wheel of cheese around the town walls in the fewest turns.

When the cheese falls, its location is marked.

Much discussion occurs regarding technique and taunts and jeers accompany the throws. Form is important.

I was the lucky one who was in the way when one roll jumped the curb and ended up between my feet. The men were very concerned that I was hurt but I wasn’t. I was more concerned that I caused some penalty points for the thrower.

When the winner is crowned, the prize is one battered wheel of cheese.
