Lazio- Ancient Monterano

Ancient Monterano is the site of a former settlement which has been inhabited since the Etruscans. It was reconstructed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in the 1600’s. Beyond the ruins in a clearing are the ruins of the convent of San Bonaventura. Bernini also designed this structure. The center piece today is a century old fig tree. Views of the surrounding countryside made the site easily defensible.
